Pirates in Paradise - Last Cavalry Studios

Posted by

As some of you may know I have been away from figure painting for a while but slowly getting back into it. I have been working primarily on building model aircraft, ships and cars for the last couple of years and have always wanted to get back into painting figures. Working with Dave at Last Cavalry has really kicked up the motivation to get back to figures. As I sit here writing this blog, Dave is coming up to me periodically and showing me the latest progress on his new project, Pegaso Model's Bust Series 1/10 scale Pirate. In addition to that, one of the nice perks of my job is one on one painting instruction. I have selected the Andrea Miniatures 1/10 scale The Looter, 1640. Both Dave's and my bust are great figures for the beginner or experienced painter. Dave is charting the progress of his Pirate on Facebook. Check it out! Lots of good information there.

The Pegaso Model Pirate consists of 7 pieces with the body, head, hat, scarf, and plinth resin while the 2 hair attachments and hat feather are metal. The casting required very little clean-up and was very crisp and detailed. Dave is painting the bust entirely in Andrea paints. Just yesterday he decided to paint the pirate's vest in paisley. Again, you can see the results on Facebook but not the amount of effort that went into creating the result which was fun and a great learning experience to watch. If you've ever wanted to be a fly on the wall of one of the great painters in our hobby, I can tell you it is worth the ticket. Anyway, the Pirate bust and The Looter are very good figures to experiment with color since neither have a required uniform.

Andrea Miniatures The Looter, 1640 is a resin kit with the exception of the sword. Very few parts – body w/head, hat w/feather, and the sword and a good sculpt and casting. I am using the Andrea Flesh Paint Set as well of some other Andrea and Vallejo acrylics.. Gotta go – Dave wants to show me the dead flat blue jacket and how he's going to weather it. Then I have to add some new Osprey titles to the website.
